The Blow that Takes the Wind from Your Sails

May 6, 2018

It's different for all of us. For me, it was losing my mother on April 4th, 2018. Since then, I haven't wanted to do much of anything, especially make a new CD. Writing this post is a baby step back to the land of the living, where I begin to remember how proud mother was of my musical gifts. Seems they skipped a generation.

I loved how my mother would sing to the radio, terribly off key, but with great joy and gusto. She made awful singing sound good. The case was different with her mother. Grandmother sang and played guitar in the church as a young girl. My dad's mother sang and played piano in church. Neither of my parents got the gift, but I got it. Now I play guitar, piano, and sing. I no longer play the clubs, but I play and sing at church.

When mother passed, I found myself alone with a piano and wrote this song about the experience:

"We're a Gift"

Sometimes heaven takes an angel home

Leaving traces of the love they've sown

Growing like a tapestry

Woven through our souls

We're a gift God gives to each other

He shares us for awhile

Then He calls us home to the table

Like a mother calls her child

So love deeply like each day's the last

These are moments that we can't get back

Growing like a tapestry

Woven through our souls

We're a gift God gives to each other

He shares us for awhile

Then He calls us home to the table

Like a mother calls her child

Like a mother calls her child

When the wind returns to my sails, this will be the first song I record for the new CD. Hope my mother can hear it in heaven.
