The Magic of Minutes

February 27, 2017

Have you ever heard someone say, "It'll only take a minute"? Or, "hang on a second"? I don't think that I've ever encountered a time when those remarks could be taken literally. I confess that I've used the phrases myself with no real intention of making good on them. What if we actually took the time we've managed to kill and put it to good use, though?

With a little "stick-to-it-iveness" on a dedicated basis, we can accomplish great things with those little scraps of time we view as "not enough". I'm honing in on completion of a second cd for my record label. Both cd's have been created in 15 minute chunks of time carved out of various places in each of my otherwise busy days. Sometimes I can find 30 minute slots, and I have even taken advantage of five minute blocks of time that became available here and there.

Setting goals that we truly believe in and working towards the deadlines we create for their attainment is a marvelous first step. The key to getting there, however, is to reclaim those "hanging seconds" and "only minutes" and apply them with consistency over time. I don't think I'd ever want to eat an elephant, but the analogy of quaffing down such a large animal one bite at a time is a fitting metaphor.

I look forward to the moment when I celebrate the achievement of releasing another cd on Raynbyrd Records. It represents many breakfasts consumed in my truck on the way to my "day job" so that I could use those scraps of time to see the project through to completion. This process has also taught me that celebratory moments are equally as important as the moments it took to get to the finish line. I might even take an extra minute or two to savor the accomplishment. Neither of those minutes will be wasted.
